The diabolical bubbles of H. Minkowski
It is a common, but nonetheless curious, phenomenon that a mathematical idea can keep resurfacing in unexpected places in the history of mathematics. I will aim to tell one such story, as I understand it (and perhaps some parts I do not understand so well), that I encountered while studying some long-forgotten questions that arise from the work of H. Minkowski from the early 1900s.
